Project title: “TraMOOC” Translation for Massive Open Online Courses

Massive Open Online Courses have been growing rapidly in size and impact. Yet the language barrier constitutes a major growth impediment in reaching out to all peoples and educating all citizens. TraMOOC aims at tackling this impediment by developing high-quality translation of all types of text genre included in MOOCs (e.g. assignments, tests, presentations, lecture subtitles, blog text) from English into eleven European and BRIC languages (DE, IT, PT, EL, DU, CS, BG, CR, PL, RU, ZH) that constitute strong use cases, are hard to translate into and have weak MT support, thus complying with the call objectives. Phrase-based and syntax-based statistical machine translation models will be developed for addressing language diversity and supporting the language-independent nature of the methodology. For a high quality, automatic translation approach and for adding value to existing infrastructure, extensive advanced bootstrapping of new resources will be performed. An innovative multi-modal automatic and human evaluation schema will further ensure translation quality. For human evaluation, an innovative, strict-access
control, time- and cost-efficient crowdsourcing setup will be used. Translation experts, domain experts and end users will also be involved. Separate task mining applications will be employed for implicit translation evaluation: (i)
topic detection will be applied to source and translated texts and the resulting entity lists will be compared, leading to further qualitative and quantitative translation evaluation results; (ii) sentiment analysis performed on MOOC users’ blog posts will reveal end user opinion/evaluation regarding translation quality. Results will be combined into a feedback vector and used to refine parallel data and retrain translation models towards a more accurate secondphase translation output. The project results will be showcased and tested on the Iversity MOOC platform and on the VideoLectures.NET digital video lecture library.



The goal of PACiNNO is to establish a platform for cooperation in research and innovation covering the whole Adriatic region. Targeting both research institutions, policy makers and business entities, the project will help develop new bridges between the research and scientific activities, carried out at academic institutions, and the economic system, with specific reference to the technological needs of SMEs. More generally, PACiNNO is aimed at overcoming the main obstacles and barriers to the economic development of the Adriatic countries, fostering the competitiveness of their minor firms (both in the high-tech fields and in the traditional industries), and promoting the creation of innovative start-ups.

To reach such ambitious goals, the project will capitalize on the several programs and initiatives already implemented in the Adriatic region by the EU, the national governments and the local stakeholders. PACiNNO will combine research activities with direct interventions in the local innovation systems.

The active involvement and participation to the project initiative of the key innovation stakeholders (research centres, territorial bodies, science and technology parks, business incubators, financial investors, business units, multinational companies based in the region) is meant to create a regional innovation system supported by a permanent platform of collaboration, where private and public institutions can interact and integrate their efforts and resources to favor innovation outcomes across the region, even after the end of PACiNNO.



A feasibility study of the business case of the on-line use of a science thematic park for educational purposes (FP6, e-Ten – 2004-1 – 517339)

The D-Space project’s main objectives are:

The demonstration and piloting of the D-Space service to the target users in real environments (e.g. schools, universities, science museums and parks, research centers)
To perform an extended validation study of the D-Space service. The validation work is a) to adapt a tried and tested methodology to validate the D-Space service and b) to implement the validation procedure in situ in a pan-European setting. The contribution of the validation phase to the market validation of the D-Space service is to perform a final usability evaluation, in the context of the scenarios, as far as the final users as concerned. The extended validation of the service concentrating on user acceptance and interoperability, crucial for market deployment, will be a major input for the final business plan.
The development of a detailed business plan, which will provide a technical and commercial overview of the value of the chain of the services. In this framework a clear and sound feasibility study of the business case will be achieved.
The development of the marketing strategy and of the associated short and medium term action plan for the full deployment of the services provided.

The D-Space service addresses:

Secure, Interoperable, cross border m-services contributing towards a trustful European cooperation with the non-EU member Western Balkan countries

In all West Balkans the penetration rates for mobile services are more than double that of fixed lines. This gives the advance to the regional public administrations to skip a step and enter directly the mobile Government. Enabling Western Balkan governmental organizations with the ability to provide secure m-services to other European public organizations and citizens holds a lot of future prospects by strengthening the fundamental structure of these organizations, by enhancing the European collaboration and by contributing towards the solution of difficult pan-European problems like illegal immigration/employment and money laundry.

SWEB directly contributes to the above-mentioned aims respecting the relevant European legislation, policies and European strategies. Its overall objectives are: to develop a secure, interoperable, open, affordable platform upon which two secure cross border government services will be built:

Residence, Employment certification and permits issuance, in which a public organization or individual citizens’ residence certification and permits and employment documents (work permits) may be securely issued, requested, sent and audited. This service will enhance the prevention of illegal immigration and employment and the secure movement of citizens in the European continent.
Electronic/Mobile Invoicing has a pivotal role in all the stages of handling Value Added Tax (VAT) for European Member States. Through e/m-invoicing, tax administrators will be able to implement new tools and procedures to carry out alternative controls. This service prevents money laundry and promotes secure investments in the region.
The SWEB platform and services will be demonstrated, tested and evaluated in Municipalities and Cities of seven EU and non-EU Members. A preliminary list of candidates for the SWEB Advisory Committee has already been formulated, which will monitor and enhance the results in order to provide fundamental impact on the policy field.

GEONEXT is a very flexible software system that is successfully used in the secondary school and university education, both by teachers and students. It has been developed in the last 15 years in the University of Bayreuth, Germany.

  • Την αξιοποίηση των πλεονεκτημάτων των τομέων βιο-οικονομίας και ενέργειας για την ώθηση των τοπικών οικονομιών, την ανάληψη νέων επιχειρηματικών πρωτοβουλιών, τη δημιουργία θέσεων εργασίας, και την ενίσχυση της επισκεψιμότητας των πόλεων και περιοχών που συμμετέχουν στο πρόγραμμα.



MAVITRA project has been put forward to the Community initiative INTERREG III B MEDOCC with the aim of analyzing the labour market at the Mediterranean and helping workers’ mobility in the Mediterranean Basin, with the creation of a virtual labour market and with the improvement of the national work intermediation services.

The Development of an Automated System for Risk Analysis in the Assistance of Medical Diagnosis and Therapy Decision – Pilot Project

The major objectives of the proposed project are basically twofold, the development of a suitable methodology to allow the automated analysis of the complex interdependencies and the main and side effects respectively, of different drugs associations as well as to detect the risks in different prescriptions, in case of particular pathologies and diagnosis, and the development of a certain classes of algorithms for automated assistance in radiotherapy.

The study is going to be developed on the basis of medical information and expertise supplied by the partners. The intended results are a package of special tailored algorithms for automated analysis of consequences in simultaneous administration of different drugs and the development of a system to assist the therapeutic decision in order to detect the possible incompatibilities and risk factors. The development of a methodology for risk evaluation in prescribing different therapies for a given diagnostic is also intended, in order to obtain in integrated assistance system of medical decision. The resulted methodology will include developments to allow higher autonomy and mobility degrees of patients through automated monitoring and personalized card. Two risk categories are of a particular interest: the former is the risk of involved by the human factor represented by physician who decides the diagnostic on the basis of incomplete and often inaccurate knowledge about both, the true health state of the patient and on main and side effects of the prescribed drugs and their associations. The latter risk category is represented by the incompleteness and the subjectivity of the knowledge supplied by the patient concerning the past history of both, the evolution of the health status and possible previous therapies. The developments intended in the framework of the projects aim to quantize each of these risk types, to measure them quantitatively, to obtain a hierarchy according to the their effects on health status.

The automated system TARD is thought as an active component of the informational society in Romania, embeddable in a more general national system as for instance the retirement because of health reasons, the recommendations for medical assistance in special treatment places, to contribute substantially to the improvement of the medical assistance services.

The most important expected consequences of the studies developed in the framework of the project are: to improve the prevention of diseases caused by the administration of incompatible drugs, to allow early and personalized diagnosis of several diseases, to allow an efficient and robust infrastructure in monitoring patients by transferring into medical practice the clinical medical research combined to the modern specialized technologies.


Development and strengthening of surveillance systems, security and control, In cooperation with the Technical University of Bari (Politecnico di Bari)

The PELAGOS project (Interreg IIIA) aims at developing an advanced security system using biometrical methods for inspecting penetration in certain areas of the Greek-Italian borders.Such border points actually identified in Corfu, because of their geographical location, with an increase in permeability factors for transporting people and goods. The expected result is an innovative monitoring tool that aims to increase current levels of security in some areas of external borders which are located in two countries participating in the Greece-Italy.

Τα περιφερειακά παρατηρητήρια για τη βιοποικιλότητα , που αφορούν την ΕΕ και τις εθνικές δεσμεύσεις των περιφερειακών διοικήσεων, έχουν στρατηγική σημασία για την παρακολούθηση και τη διασφάλιση της συνεχούς επικαιροποίησης των στοιχείων σχετικά με τη βιοποικιλότητα απειλούμενων ειδών. Στο έργο “BIG” γενικός στόχος είναι η βελτίωση της διακυβέρνησης, της διαχείρισης και της βιωσιμότητας των αγροτικών και παράκτιων προστατευόμενων περιοχών και η συμβολή στην εφαρμογή των διατάξεων του δικτύου Natura 2000 στην Ιταλία και την Ελλάδα.



Ενισχύοντας την παραγωγή ελαιολάδου μέσω καινοτόμων ICT εφαρμογών

Περιγραφή: Στόχος του e-olive είναι η ανάπτυξη ICT εργαλείων, πρακτικών και οδηγιών που θα εφαρμόζονται στην περιοχή της Μεσογείου με σκοπό την βελτιστοποίηση της παραγωγής των ελαιοκομικών προϊόντων (και των αντίστοιχων υποπροϊόντων). Η σημαντικότερη πρόκληση για το παρόν έργο είναι να φέρει σε επαφή επιστήμονες από διαφορετικούς επιστημονικούς κλάδους, μαζί με τους παραγωγούς ελαιολάδου προκειμένου να εισαχθούν με ένα αποτελεσματικό τρόπο αναδυόμενες τεχνολογίες πληροφοριών και επικοινωνίας, τόσο στον τομέα της παραγωγής όσο και στην αλυσίδα εφοδιασμού του ελαιολάδου.


Cultural Unification through Learning and Technology (CULT)

Project CULT aims to create a cooperation platform between schools that reside in rural areas of Europe. For this purpose, we are employing both established and novel interaction and communication technologies. Moreover, we are working closely with schools and teachers, in order to leverage their ability to adopt and adapt technologies in ways that are suitable for their skills and needs.

CULT (MC-ERG-2008-230894) is a Marie Curie European Reintegration Grants (ERG) project funded by the European Commission (EC) under the 7th Framework Program (FP7).

The project is hosted by the Department of Informatics, Ionian University (Corfu, Greece). The project start date is 1st January 2009 and the final date is 31st December 2011.

Ευρωπαϊκή Ψηφιακή Βιβλιοθήκη Μαθηματικών

Σκοπός του προγράμματος αυτού είναι η δημιουργία μιας Ευρωπαϊκής Ψηφιακής Μαθηματικής Βιβλιοθήκης (European Digital Mathematics Library – EuDML ). Το EuDML αποτελείται από εταίρους από ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη, σε μια προσπάθεια ώστε να μπορέσουν να συνεργαστούν και να συγκεντρώσουν όσο το δυνατό μεγαλύτερη συλλογή και να την δομήσουν χρησιμοποιώντας τα σωστά τεχνολογικά εργαλεία. Αυτό θα επιτευχθεί με την χρήση μιας ενιαίας πλατφόρμας η οποία θα μπορεί να υποστηρίζει τις υπηρεσίες ψηφιακής βιβλιοθήκης οι οποίες απαιτούνται.

Asynchronous video link between primary education schools in the USA and Greece

Περιγραφή: H έρευνα εξετάζει τις δυνατότητες της ασύγχρονης επικοινωνίας με βίντεο για την διευκόλυνση της διαπολιτισμικής ανταλλαγής. Για το σκοπό αυτό έγινε μια συγκριτική μελέτη της συμπεριφοράς 30 παιδιών (9-11 ετών) από την ΗΠΑ και την Ελλάδα αναφορικά με την χρήση email και ασύγχρονων μηνυμάτων βίντεο με ένα νέο εργαλείο που φτιάχτηκε για αυτό τον σκοπό και λέγεται VideoPal.

S.M.ART.BUIL.T – Structural Monitoring of ARTistic and historical BUILding Testimonies

Architectural heritage is an important part of the history and identity of Italy and Greece, contributing to their economy and well being. On the other side, ancient buildings suffer a high vulnerability to dynamic loads, which may induce an unpredictable partial or total collapse. Recent past experience after L’Aquila earthquake strongly evidence this problem. The core idea of the “S.M.ART. BUIL.T.” is risks prevention, which concerns not only the prevention of loss of lives and property but also the preservation of artistic and historical buildings from natural hazards.

The main objectives are the implementation of procedures for the structural monitoring, the seismic vulnerability assessment, the development of guidelines for strengthening and repair of the historical buildings (in Trani and Corfu). The two historic centers are made up of many ancient and brittle masonry buildings, mostly built with local stone, representative of a widespread typology in the Mediterranean area.

The project aims at providing to technical officials of the territorial authorities of Puglia and Ionian Islands Regions some indispensable training tools for the development and/or validation of structural restoration projects and seismic rehabilitation of historical buildings.

Adri Health Mob – Adriatic Model of Sustainable Mobility in the health & Care SectorTraMOOC

Το πρόγραμμα στοχεύει στη δημιουργία ενός δια-λειτουργικού ολοκληρωμένου ηλεκτρονικού συστήματος στον τομέα της υγείας και πρόνοιας στο χώρο της Αδριατικής, προκειμένου να βελτιωθεί η κινητικότητα των πολιτών (κάτοικοι / τουρίστες / χρήστες / ασθενείς) και να επιτευχθεί η βελτίωση της πρόσβασης σε υπηρεσίες υγείας και περίθαλψης, μέσω ενός αποτελεσματικού και αποδοτικού συστήματος μεταφορών. Συγκεκριμένα τα αντικείμενα του έργου είναι τα εξής: Η δημιουργία ηλεκτρονικού συστήματος για την αποτελεσματική συλλογή και ανάλυση ιατρικών δεδομένων και πληροφοριών των χωρών της Αδριατικής. Η εισαγωγή προηγμένων τεχνολογιών πληροφορικής στον τομέα της υγείας και φροντίδας με επίκεντρο την κινητικότητα των πολιτών. Ο εκσυγχρονισμός και η προσαρμογή των υφιστάμενων φυσικών υποδομών που σχετίζονται άμεσα ή έμμεσα με την κινητικότητα των πολιτών. Η δημιουργία ιατρικού ηλεκτρονικού φακέλου για ασθενείς που πάσχουν από νευροεκφυλιστικές παθήσεις, όπως το Alzheimer και το Πάρκινσον. Objective of the Project DEFeND

DEFeND will deliver a platform which empowers organisations in different sectors to assess the compliance status, plan the achievement of the GDPR compliance and increase their maturity in different aspects of GDPR. DEFeND platform enables building and analysing models following a Privacy-by-Design approach spanning over two levels, the Planning Level and the Operational Level, and across three management areas: Data Scope, Data Process and Data Breach. The consortium will leverage existing software, tools and methodologies towards the implementation of the platform software components. The DEFeND platform will be tested in living labs pilots, involving partners from four E.U. countries in four different areas: healthcare, banks, energy and local public administration.

Το έργο έχει στόχο την ενίσχυση της εμπειρίας των επισκεπτών μίας πόλης μέσω της ανάπτυξης μιας εφαρμογής για κινητό τηλέφωνο που επιτρέπει στον επισκέπτη να περιηγηθεί στην πόλη σαν να βρίσκεται σε ένα ανοιχτό μουσείο. Ο επισκέπτης, μέσω της εφαρμογής θα ανακαλύψει ενδιαφέρουσες πολιτιστικές και ιστορικές τοποθεσίες και παράλληλα θα πλοηγείται με έξυπνο τρόπο στην πόλη. Επίσης, θα έχει την ευκαιρία να ανακαλύψει πολιτιστικές και ιστορικές τοποθεσίες που ταιριάζουν με τα ενδιαφέροντά του, να μάθει για την αρχιτεκτονική, τον πολιτισμό και την ιστορία της πόλης, καθώς και την καθημερινότητα των κατοίκων. Το βασικό χαρακτηριστικό της εφαρμογής είναι η άρρητη σύνδεση μεταξύ της πλοήγησης του επισκέπτη, της οπτικής επαφής με το σημείο ενδιαφέροντος και η παροχή πληροφοριών. Η εφαρμογή θα παρέχει ενσωματωμένο χάρτη της πόλης και όλα τα σημεία ενδιαφέροντος που επιλέγει ο επισκέπτης ως τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα πολιτιστικά και ιστορικά αξιοθέατα. Η εφαρμογή κινητού τηλεφώνου θα υπολογίζει και θα προτείνει στον επισκέπτη τη βέλτιστη διαδρομή που μπορεί να ακολουθήσει, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη παράγοντες όπως η ηλικία, η προσβασιμότητα και η δυσκολία πρόσβασης (π.χ. ανηφορικοί δρόμοι, απότομοι δρόμοι, σκάλες κ.λπ.).
