“Transforming a City into a Sociable Smart City”

Aim & Scope
In this workshop we approach urban computing from an angle that focuses on its effect on (people's perception)/(the sociable qualities) of public space. Technical progress has achieved efficient operation of computing infrastructure in the urban landscape, yet the effect of this technology on how people understand, embody and experience the city landscape is still open to research.
As part of this workshop, participants will engage in an outdoor exploration of the city landscape aiming to locate areas of particular interest that can be augmented with urban computing technology in order to function more efficiently or to transform their character. Participants will be asked to observe a public space, identify the primary actors that traverse or use it and propose appropriate technology-‐based interventions that tease the line between its occupant's familiarity and unfamiliarity with it, disclose its sociable qualities and have the power to enhance or transform it.
The results of this outdoor exploration of the city will be presented to the 3rd Hybrid City Conference (Athens, Greece, September 2015) and the participants will be invited to contribute to a journal article at a special issue on “Sociable Smart Cities”.
