"From Medical Informatics to Health Informatics: Past, Present and Future of Health Information Science"
Abstract:
The domain of medical informatics has been developed as an intersection of computer or information technology science and health care and medicine. Early medical informatics applications used to support specific medical tasks. Contemporary health informatics applications are based on systems integration and support the health and well being of individuals. The vision that the Electronic Health record (EHR) when implemented will proactively support each individual’s health has attracted excitement and interest for investments. Indeed, the benefits of the application of the EHR have been widely acknowledged. However, that vision has not yet been achieved. It is therefore a challenge for health information scientists to provide their contributions and expand the frontiers of research in order to provide the scientific background and the foundations for the application of the EHR.
