Interactive smart environment applications development. Internet of Things (IoT) definition and applications. Use of open-source Arduino platform. Other smart application development platforms.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The main learning goal of the course "Smart Environments & Applications" is to get acquainted with the technology of smart environments and to develop prototype applications using Arduino-based architectures. Smart environments refer to user environments where using devices, sensors and electronic platforms collaborate to provide the user with safe, useful and smart applications. Homes, offices, hospitals and many more spaces can be enriched with smart solutions that offer users a more interactive and personalized environment. In a smart home monitoring indoor and outdoor temperatures, turning remotely on and off devices, as well as controlling access via a mobile or a computer is only the beginning of a series of applications that make the home more comfortable and smart without even being a luxury. Arduino is an open-source electronic platform based on the use of software and electronic components and aims to enable and ease the development of interactive applications in a smart environment. It’s a technology that allows the collection of information from various sources and their use online for remote monitoring, control and activation of devices. It is also possible to improve smart applications due to the inherit scalability of the system and the change in the way the data is processed.

Upon successful completion of the course students will:

  • Have proven knowledge and understanding in the field of computer science and electronics related to the development of smart applications based on the use of advanced devices, such as sensors, mobile phones, Internet home appliances.
  • Be able to use the knowledge and understanding they have acquired to analyze and design the architecture of a smart application.
  • Have the skills to apply the knowledge they have acquired to set up and configure a smart environment application.
  • Have developed the ability to develop intelligent applications on their own in different environments.
  • Have advanced knowledge from recent research on cutting-edge technologies and applications within the Internet of Things (IoT).
